Study Habits, Homework, and Exam Preparation: Putting It All into Practice

In our first article we explored the concept of scaffolding: the structured support that helps students reach beyond what they can currently do alone. In our second article we looked at the growth mindset and the research of Carol Dweck, which shows that students who understand intelligence as something that develops through effort, consistently outperform those who see it as fixed.
Both ideas point toward the same practical question: what does good learning look like at a student’s own desk, in their own time, day after day? This third article addresses that question directly.
It is divided into three parts. Part One covers foundational study habits grounded in cognitive science. Part Two examines the role of homework, which is more nuanced than is often presented. Part Three offers practical guidance on exam preparation. Taken together, these three parts create a picture of how students learn as independent learners.
Part One: Building Strong Habits
Not all study is equally effective. Research (Dunlosky 2013) reviewing ten of the most commonly used learning strategies, found that the techniques most students rely on, such as re-reading notes and highlighting, are among the least effective. The following six habits reflect what the research consistently supports.
1. Space Your Study Sessions
Spreading study across multiple shorter sessions is significantly more effective than attempting to learn the same material in a single long session. This is known as the spacing effect. A student who reviews material on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday will retain far more than one who reviews the same material for three hours on Friday alone.
Encourage your students to plan their week with this in mind, returning to material at increasing intervals rather than leaving it until the night before. And even in a single study session, break it up with some physical activity. Ensuring the brain is actually engaged is critical, rather than just continuing a minimally effective study session. I had a mate who had a squash court at his place. He studied with a friend: 45 minutes solid application, then 15 minutes squash.
2. Use Retrieval Practice, Not Re-reading
The act of retrieving information from memory, rather than passively reading it again, dramatically strengthens long-term retention. Practically speaking, this means closing the textbook and trying to recall what was just studied, using flashcards, answering practice questions, or writing summaries from memory. Every time a student successfully retrieves something they had partially forgotten, the memory trace becomes stronger. Re-reading, by contrast, creates an illusion of familiarity without building genuine recall.
This process I applied back in the days of cassette recorders. When waking, showering, dressing and preparing, I would play the tape, pause, and then try to repeat the content. If I couldn’t, it meant I had not learned the material (often a literary quote I needed to repeat verbatim).
3. Interleave Subjects and Topics
Students often study one topic exhaustively before moving to the next. Interleaving, or mixing up topics within a study session, feels less comfortable but produces better long-term learning. When a student practises three different types of mathematics problems in sequence rather than thirty of the same type, they must identify which approach to use, which is precisely the skill required in an exam.
The same principle applies across subjects: varying what you study within a session keeps the brain actively engaged rather than operating on autopilot. Same principle: create structures that ensure the brain is engaged!
4. Plan Before You Begin
Sitting down to study without a plan is one of the most common sources of wasted time. Effective students take two or three minutes at the start of each session to identify what they will cover, how long they will spend on it, and what success looks like. (This is a bit like lesson planning for teachers.)
This small investment in planning dramatically reduces the time lost to distraction and passive re-reading. Students should also review their plan at the end of the session, noting what they understood and what still needs attention.
5. Create a Dedicated Study Environment
Environment shapes behaviour far more than students realise. A consistent study space, free from the distractions of phones and television, signals to the brain that focused work is beginning. This is not simply a matter of tidiness: the association between a physical environment and a mental state is well documented in psychological research.
Students who study in the same place consistently find it easier to concentrate than those who study wherever is convenient. If a quiet, dedicated space is not available at home, the school library is an important resource. This can be controversial: music or no music? When I really became serious about study, I found the music I loved to be an absolute distraction! Consider student: can you give all your attention to two foci?
6. Prioritise Sleep
Sleep is not the enemy of study time; it is an essential part of the learning process. During sleep the brain consolidates what it has learned during the day, transferring information from short-term to long-term memory. A student who studies until midnight and then sleeps five hours is likely to retain less than one who studies until ten o’clock and sleeps eight hours.
Adolescents require between eight and ten hours of sleep per night for optimal cognitive function. Consistent sleep deprivation impairs memory, concentration, and emotional regulation, all of which are directly relevant to academic performance.
Part Two: The Role of Homework
Homework is one of the most debated topics in education research, and for good reason. The evidence on its effectiveness is more complex than either its strongest advocates or its fiercest critics tend to acknowledge. Understanding what the research actually says helps parents and students approach homework with the right expectations.
7. What the Research Says
I have referred to John Hattie’s landmark meta-analysis of educational research, Visible Learning, previously (in our HAB PD). He found that the effect of homework on student achievement varies considerably by age and context. At secondary level, homework has a moderate positive effect on learning outcomes, with students who consistently complete homework gaining roughly one additional year of academic progress over those who do not. At primary level, the effect is much smaller and sometimes negligible.
Critically, the quality of homework matters far more than the quantity: tasks that consolidate and extend classroom learning are effective; tasks that merely keep students busy are not. (Tasks that parents do, probably keep them younger with inflated egos!)
8. Homework to Retrieve and Apply
The most effective homework is purposeful. It should connect directly to what has been learned in class and require students to actively retrieve or apply knowledge in a realistic time frame. Parents can support this by asking their child not simply whether the homework is done, but what they had to think about to complete it.
9. The Role of Parents
Research consistently shows that parental involvement in homework is most beneficial when it is supportive rather than directive. A parent who sits with a child and asks guiding questions is more helpful than one who provides answers. A parent who creates a calm, distraction-free environment and shows genuine interest in what their child is learning does more for their child’s progress than one who battles over whether the homework is done.
The scaffolding principle from Article One applies here too: parents are most effective when they support the edge of their child’s capacity, not when they work beyond it on their child’s behalf.
Part Three: Purposeful Exam Preparation
Exam preparation is an area where the gap between effort and effectiveness is particularly wide. Many students work hard in the weeks before exams yet still underperform, because the methods they rely on, such as re-reading notes, copying out summaries, and studying without a plan, are not well matched to the demands of examination. The following strategies address that gap directly.
10. Know the Format Before You Begin
Before a student can prepare effectively for an exam, they need to understand exactly what the exam requires: how many questions, what types (multiple choice, short answer, essay), which topics are assessed, and how marks are distributed.
Students who sit down to study without this information inevitably waste time on low-value areas or arrive at the exam surprised by question formats they have not practised. Reviewing past papers and mark schemes at the outset of any preparation period is not cheating; it is essential orientation.
11. Plan Backwards from the Exam Date
Rather than planning forward from today, effective exam preparation plans backwards from the exam date. A student who knows their exam is on 10 May can work backwards to identify how many weeks are available, which topics need the most attention, and when practice papers should be completed.
This reverse-timeline approach prevents the common pattern of spending the first two weeks on familiar, comfortable material and running out of time for the areas that most need work.
12. Practise Under Exam Conditions
Reading through notes is not the same as sitting an exam. Students who practise answering questions under timed conditions, without access to notes or textbooks, are far better prepared than those who do not. Timed practice also identifies specific weaknesses, such as running out of time, losing marks on a particular question type, or struggling to recall material under pressure, that simply cannot be identified any other way. Where past papers are available, these are the single most valuable revision resource.
13. Read Questions Carefully
A disproportionate number of marks are lost in exams not through lack of knowledge but through misreading questions. Students should be taught to read each question twice before beginning their answer, to underline or note the key instruction words (such as analyse, compare, evaluate, describe), and to check their answer addresses what was actually asked rather than what they hoped would be asked. This habit takes seconds and consistently recovers marks.
14. Reflect After Every Assessment
The growth mindset principle from Article Two applies directly to assessment. A test or exam is not the end of learning; it is data. After any graded task, students should ask: where did I lose marks? Was it a knowledge gap, a misreading of the question, a time management problem, or exam nerves? Each answer points to a specific and addressable action before the next assessment. Students who develop this reflective habit improve consistently across a school year in ways that students who simply move on do not.
Scaffolding gives students the structure to climb. A growth mindset gives them the belief that climbing is worth doing. Strong study habits, a purposeful approach to homework, and disciplined exam preparation give them the tools to do it well.
All three are reinforcing: a student who spaces their study, engages seriously with homework, practises retrieval, manages their environment, and reflects on their results is, in the most practical and concrete sense, building their own intelligence. That is exactly what Vygotsky and Dweck were pointing toward, and it is what every good teacher and parent hopes to see.
